International Olympic Committee members will this week discuss ordering an early end to the global section of the protest-marred Beijing Olympic torch relay, a top IOC official said on Tuesday.
"I am sure it will be discussed," Gunilla Lindberg, a vice president of the IOC, said when asked if she thought the IOC could scrap the overseas legs of the torch relay.
Lindberg said it was important for the IOC to review the international torch relay in light of protests that disrupted the last two legs of the relay in London and Paris.
"I think we need to have a full review," she told journalists. The IOC executive board begins a three-day meeting in Beijing on Thursday. "I think it is very sad that people use the Olympic torch for violence when it is a symbol of peace and unity," Lindberg said.
"I feel upset and I feel angry because the Olympic torch... has always been respected."
The IOC member further added that she supported scrapping the international leg of the relay, saying the event should only be held in Greece and in the host country of the Games.
