Undeterred by a knife brandished by a thug, a Sikh shopkeeper in Suffolk, in east England, chased the hooded attacker out of his shop with a bottle of wine this week, earning praise from the local community.
Jasvinder Bains, 40, was captured on his store's CCTV as he saw off the knife-waving robber with a bottle of wine. He refused to be intimidated when the thug brandished the seven-inch blade in front of his face and demanded money.
Bains, instead, grabbed a bottle of wine by the neck, waved it menacingly at the shocked robber and chased him out of the shop.
"When he put his hand on the till I just got angry. I didn't have much time to think. I just wanted to protect myself and my money and to get him out," Bains told the media after the attack.
This is the second incident in the last three months when an Indian-origin shopkeeper has successfully foiled attacks by hooded robbers.
Jasvinder, who owned the shop since he came to Britain from India 17 years ago, called the police after the attack.
"We have made extensive inquiries into this and are renewing appeals for information," a police spokesman said.
In February, Tony Singh, an India-origin shopkeeper in Skelmersdale, Lancashire, became a local hero when he killed his assailant in self-defence. He faced the prospect of being charged with murder but the Crown prosecution service decided against it.
Singh, 34, was leaving for home after closing his shop when he was attacked by a hooded man who tried to rob him.
During the struggle to defend himself, Singh took possession of the robber's knife, and in the scuffle, the assailant, identified as Liam Kilroe, died after suffering a stab wound in the chest.
